Ruth Skinner is a Toronto-based documentary photographer who blends traditional and contemporary practices using the enduring esthetic of black and white. Originally from Prince Edward Island, she completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) University in 1989 and a Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Media at Ryerson University in 2012. For the past 25 years she has explored ferry systems and their cultural significance. In 1992, she documented the final years of the Borden/Cape Tormentine Ferry prior to the opening of the Confederation Bridge linking P.E.I. to New Brunswick. A recent exhibition, Passages explored the 179-year history of the Toronto Island Ferry and its interrelationship with both residents and non-residents of Toronto Island. Her work has been exhibited at the Anna Leonowens Gallery in Halifax, and the Harbourfront, AWOL, and IMA Galleries in Toronto.
